Since Osprey's founding, every single product design bearing the Osprey name has passed through the hands of owner and founder Mike Pfotenhauer, undergoing relentless scrutiny. From stitching the first lines of custom-fitted packs, to meticulously designing innovative products with intuitive features, to forging personal relationships with the sewing operators who construct the packs, Mike has been the unbreakable thread of the company.

Since Osprey was founded in 1974, every product design has passed through the hands of owner and founder Mike Pfotenhauer, who created his first backpack at the age of 16. In Santa Cruz, California, the young entrepreneur opened a retail store in front of his rental house, where backpackers and travelers came to buy custom packaging that was made by Mike himself in a matter of days. As demand for well-fitted suits increased, Osprey found herself moving to her current home in southwest Colorado. Today, Osprey is a melting pot of different personalities, backgrounds and abilities. All agree that adventure is open to everyone and can be found anywhere.
